Register of Deeds office begins electronic recordings program

The Wayne County Register of Deeds office last month implemented a program that allows people to make electronic recording, or eRecording, through the Internet.
Satisfactions of Security Instruments is the only document type currently accepted for eRecording. Satisfactions are documents that banks, mortgage companies and attorneys send to record that show full payment of deeds of trusts or other debts, said Lois Mooring, registrar for Wayne County.
"Starting with this type of document allows us to see how Level I of e-Recording works," she said. "Last year the Wayne County Register of Deeds Office recorded 17,044 documents and 4,708 of those were Satisfactions.
"Though the documents come in over the Internet, we give them the same review process as if they were hand delivered. After they are reviewed and found suitable for recordation, they are downloaded and scanned into the system as originals. If they are not suitable for recordation, they are rejected and the submitter gets notification of this via the Internet."
This will allow personnel to process documents even more efficiently, she said. It will reduce delivery time and save on mailing costs for both the customers and the county.
In addition, the county did not incur any expense to put in the system.
"The banks and lending institutions pay the eRecording provider for the services," Ms. Mooring said. "The eRecording provider sets up a secure site for the submitter to begin filing documents electronically."
She encourages all banks, attorneys, and financial companies that would like to submit electronic recorded documents to the Wayne County Register of Deeds to contact her to get the name of the authorized eRecording provider.
"We are really excited to become a part of this new technology," she said.
