Kittty Askins volunteer recognized

A Kitty Askins Hospice Center volunteer has been recognized for his efforts to create a more special atmosphere for patients and their families.
Paul Anderson of Goldsboro retired from Bell South after 32 years of service. He has made such an impression as a volunteer at Kitty Askins that manager Debbie Denlinger nominated him for state recognition.
"Paul comes to Kitty Askins three to five times a week to fill the bird feeders or just check to see if we need anything," she said. "Even though he volunteers his time, he is available 24/7. Many times we call him in the middle of the night or on weekends to repair, troubleshoot or just provide support when something is broken of needs repair."
Some repairs require several trips to the hardware store or to his home to get just the right tool, she explained.
"Mr. Anderson pays for items needed for the repairs without accepting reimbursement," she said. "Once, when gas was over $4 a gallon, he made several trips to find the correct part needed for a repair job. When we offered him some money for gas, he refused. So we thought we would outsmart him and put the money in his vehicle. He found it and brought it right back to us."
Anderson was recently acknowledged by the Association for Home and Hospice Care of North Carolina.
"We are blessed that he has adopted Kitty Askins and will stop at nothing to see that we have what we need to fulfill the purpose of caring for terminally ill patients and their families," Mrs. Denlinger said.
