County residents can dispose of hazardous household chemicals

Wayne County residents will have the opportunity later this month to clean their cabinets' household hazardous wastes.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on will be May 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the county landfill.
Residents may bring items to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, located at the Wayne County landfill, 4608 South Landfill Road in Dudley (Dudley Convenience Center).
At the landfill, residents will be directed to the collection area. An attendant will ask about the chemicals and will remove them from the vehicle. People are asked to remain inside their vehicle to allow for quicker processing.
This collection is for household hazardous waste only.
Household hazardous wastes include materials that are corrosive, reactive or toxic. Oven cleaners, bleach and other products causing skin burns fall in the corrosive category. Reactive materials include chlorine, lye, some laboratory chemicals and other products that could explode or give off gases. Pesticides, herbicides, antifreeze and other poisonous materials that can kill or cause illness are classified as toxic.
Acceptable items to bring include the following: Pesticides, brake fluid, antifreeze; rat poison, kitchen cleaners, herbicides, batteries, gasoline, solvents, lacquer, pool chemicals, kerosene, mothballs, bathroom cleaners, degreasers, spray cans, metal polish, spot removers, paint/paint thinner, oven cleaners, nail polish/remover, paint stripper, upholstery cleaners, mercury debris, drain cleaners, wood preservative, furniture polish, tile cleaners, powder cleansers, and motor oil.
Items not accepted include: Trash; explosives, fireworks, medical waste, commercial waste, flares, smoke detectors, gas cylinders or radioactive material.
Residents are urged to follow safety precautions when preparing and transporting wastes.
* Always leave materials in their original container.
* Never mix materials.
* Wrap bottles with newspaper (for padding).
* If a container is leaking, put it in another container and use cat litter to absorb the spill.
* Don't transport any material in the same part of your vehicle as passengers or pets.
