People living along Moye Road in northern Wayne County, and possibly those living on Moye Street in Fremont, will soon have a new address -- New Daniels Church Road.
The name changed was approved by a 5-2 vote during county commissioners' Tuesday session.
Commissioners Andy Anderson and Jack Best voted against the change because of the problems and costs it will create for residents.
The change was sought by church members and was recommended by the Planning Board. County Manager Lee Smith said his staff also recommended the change.
The name change affects a 1.5-mile strip of road from Davis Mill Road to Black Creek Road just northeast of Fremont.
During a public hearing earlier this month residents opposed the change because of the cost and inconvenience associated with changing information on bank and other accounts, driver's licenses, Social Security and mailing labels.
Also during the hearing, commissioners were told that Fremont was looking at changing Moye Street to New Daniels Church Street. The town board was waiting on commissioners before acting.
Anderson contested comments that only a few people would be affected since it could be changed in town as well.
Changes will have to be made in the county's 911 system, Anderson said.
"No one from the church lives on the road so I cannot go along with it," he said.
"I changed my address years ago and some of my mail still goes to the old address," Best said. "It is more of a pain than what you realize."
Commissioner Sandra McCullen said she had spoken with church members about the costs to residents affected by the change.
"They told me they would reach out financially to help," she said.
The church will have to foot the cost of $250 for new road name signs.
