Duplin trailer inspection rate set to go up $25

KENANSVILLE -- People erecting single-wide mobile homes in Duplin County are going to have to pay $25 more for inspections.
The Duplin Board of Commissioners voted unanimously earlier this month to raise the mobile home inspection rate to $125, and authorized building inspector Ferrell Thigpen to impose a $50 penalty for setting up the mobile home prior to getting proper permits.
Thigpen said this morning the new rate resulted from a more stringent minimum housing ordinance adopted in April. Under the new ordinance, Thigpen has to inspect the mobile home a second time if it does not pass inspection on the first trip.
"It's something we decided we need to do because we make an extra trip to each one," Thigpen said.
The new inspection rate that takes effect July 1.
Meanwhile, the new minimum housing ordinance goes into effect on May 18. And while the inspector made 30 trips for 30 homes last month, the rest of this month and throughout June, there will be possibly 60 trips to make.
But Thigpen said his office can manage the extra trips for the time being.
"It won't be too bad," he said. "We can stand it for a little while."
