Postal food drive set for Saturday

With the help of Goldsboro residents, seven local charities and food banks will be able to restock their pantries by the end of the weekend.
The annual postal letter carrier-sponsored food drive will be held tomorrow, and if its goal of 18,000 pounds of non-perishable food is reached, City Mission of Goldsboro, the Community Soup Kitchen, Community Crisis Center, Salvation Army, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Wayne Uplift Domestic Violence Shelter and United Church Ministries all will get a much-needed boost.
The local drive -- which asks residents to leave a bag of cans by their mailbox Saturday morning before their carrier's typical arrival time -- is part of a national effort by more than 1,300 chapters of the National Association of Letter Carriers to help fill local food banks.
The drive will cover all residents with a Goldsboro Zip Code, including 27530 through 27534, but anyone can donate by dropping off food at the Berkeley Station and Downtown Post Offices.
Once the food is collected, local volunteers from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, churches and Goldsboro's Target store will join carriers in sorting and distribution of the goods.
