Commissioners ask for public input on name change request

Wayne County commissioners will hold a public hearing Tuesday on a proposal to change the name of Moye Road to New Daniels Chapel Road.
The hearing will begin at 9:15 a.m. in the commissioners' meeting room on the fourth floor of the county courthouse annex.
Commissioners also will meet as the Board of Equalization and Review at 8 a.m. for people who have questioned tax valuations. The board meeting will start at 9 a.m.
The hearing was to have been held at the board's April 21 meeting, but had to be rescheduled because the county failed to meet the required notification deadline.
However, during that meeting, commissioners did allow people to comment on the proposal. The comments were recorded in the meeting minutes.
One person spoke in favor of the change, while two others opposed the change. Those in opposition cited the cost and confusion the change could have on mail, bank accounts and driver's licenses. Also, they said that businesses would have to change letterheads and stationery.
In a letter to the commissioners, John L. Pippin Jr. wrote in opposition to the change because of those costs.
"The church is a fine church with a lot of fine people that I know well, but I feel that they had a chance to rename the road originally in the late 1980s when the county was naming roads, and they did not pursue it."
Moye Road (Secondary Road 1504) is located just northeast of Fremont. It continues into the town limits as Moye Street.
The name change, requested by officials at New Daniels Chapel Church, was recommended by the Planning Board.
Commissioners also will discuss a $355,122 budget proposal from the Wayne County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council.
The council has recommended the following programs:
-- $48,562, Teen Court and psychological services;
-- $90,003, Connect Four;
-- $47,632, C-4 Restitution;
-- $3,500, Juvenile Crime Prevention Council administration;
-- $165,425, ADLA Structured Day.
Also on the agenda is a presentation on the Wayne Occupational Readiness Keys for Success (WORKS) program and requests for proclamations for Foster Parents of Wayne County, Older Americans Month in Wayne County and Day of Prayer in Wayne County.
