A basketball free throw "shoot-a-thon" will be held May 2, from 9 a.m. until noon at the Family Y to help raise money for needy children in Africa.
The event is being organized by Austin Jeffreys, a seventh-grade student at St. Mary School, who learned of the nationwide Hoops of Hope non-profit organization that sponsor similar events from coast to coast as a way to help orphans, children with AIDS and others suffering from disease and starvation.
An estimated 20,000 participants are expected to participate in the event. The event is open to anyone and all donations are welcome. Participants are encouraged to shoot 1,000 free throws apiece, to represent the estimated 1,000 children who are orphaned every four hours by AIDS.
