Confederate Memorial Day service Sunday

To honor the fallen North Carolinians who fought at the Battle of Bentonville during the Civil War, the Harper House-Bentonville Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, in conjunction with Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site, will hold its annual commemoration of Confederate Memorial Day on Sunday.
The ceremony will begin at 3 p.m., near the Confederate mass grave site. A speaker will deliver an address, followed by a wreath-laying, a roll call of the North Carolina units at Bentonville, and finally, a musket salute fired by costumed re-enactors.
Fought on March 19-21, 1865, the Battle of Bentonville was not only the largest battle ever to occur on North Carolina soil, but was also one of the last major Confederate offensives of the war.
Among the ranks of the Confederate army at Bentonville were seventeen regiments and four battalions of infantry as well as six batteries of artillery from the North Carolina. North Carolinians composed nearly one-third of the Confederate army at Bentonville.
