Special Olympics gives awards

Special Olympics Wayne County recently held its annual awards ceremony for 2009-2010.
Local winners include the following:
*Outstanding Teacher of the Year: Shelton Daye, Carver Elementary School
*Outstanding Organization: Knights of Columbus
*Outstanding Corporation: A Small Miracle, Inc.
*Outstanding Volunteer: Lorice Smith, Herman Park Center
*Outstanding Coach: Karen Sellner, O'Berry Center
*Outstanding Family: The Parrish Family, Dean, Kathleen, Lauren and Grace
*Honorary Athlete of the Year: Ryan Hood
*Athlete of the Year: Marcus Cox.
Award recipients next go on to compete in Cape Fear Area competition, followed by the state level, said Rich Walderman, Special Olympics coordinator.
