Vice President Joe Biden spoke at the Pikeville Volunteer Fire Department this afternoon, announcing the department will receive funds for a new fire station.

Vice President Joe Biden this afternoon announced Pikeville Fire Department will receive the funding it needs to build a new fire station and better serve the rural community.

Getting moderately emotional, Biden told the crowd gathered to hear his speech that being at a volunteer fire department held special meaning to him personally -- explaining it was a volunteer department that freed and saved his sons after a 1972 car wreck in Hockessin, Del., that took the life of his first wife and a daughter.

Biden spoke about the importance of small town and rural fire and rescue services during the appearance.

After the speaking engagement, Biden's motorcade headed back to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

Once there, Biden visited the base fitness center where he talked to children and others on the basketball court, lifted weights with airmen and thanked them for their sacrifices.
