A longtime administrator with Wayne County Public Schools was charged with driving while impaired last week by the North Carolina Highway Patrol in Pender County.
Richard Sauls, 57, of Fremont, currently principal at Rosewood Ele-mentary School, was arrested on March 18, according to officials from the Pender County Sheriff's Office.
Charged with DWI and reckless driving, Sauls was released on $1,000 bond, with a court date of May 14.
Sauls had previously been principal at Rosewood High School, Mount Olive Middle and Southern Wayne High School.
Ken Derksen, public information officer for the school district, was able to say little about the matter.
"We are aware of the charges and are limited in what we can say as it's a personnel issue," he said Thursday. "It is being handled in accordance to board policy."
