Thousands of dollars have been raised in the past few weeks but Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp. executive director Julie Thompson is still only cautiously optimistic about the fate of this summer's Center Street Jam lineup.

In fact, if the DGDC does not raise nearly $4,000 more in the coming week, some of the concerts would likely be cancelled, she said.

Earlier this month, Mrs. Thompson attributed lack of sponsor dollars -- something she said has never been a problem -- to the economic climate.

But Friday, she went a step further.

"I think a lot of people take it for granted. They think (Center Street Jam) is always going to be there," she said. "But now, I think they are starting to realize that it costs money. We can skim by with $45,000 but we're not there yet."

Mrs. Thompson said the final decision on this summer's lineup will be announced March 23, a day she called "the absolute last day deadline" for sponsorship pledges.

Those who wish to contribute to Center Street Jam or would like more information on becoming an event sponsor should contact the DGDC at 735-4959.
