Middle school students will be tested on their reading skills Thursday as Wayne County Public Schools hosts the 23rd annual Battle of the Books competition.
The quiz bowl-type competition starts at 9 a.m. in the Dillard Middle School auditorium, and is open to the public.
Students in grades 6 through 8 must read 27 books chosen by a statewide committee. The competition tests their comprehension of the books.
"Reading is fundamental to success in every subject area," said Olivia Pierce, WCPS Executive Director for Community Relations, Instructional Media and Technology. "The Battle of the Books is a fun competitive event that motivates students to read. All students who participate are winners."
Schools participating in this year's event include Dillard, Eastern Wayne, Greenwood, Mount Olive, Norwayne and Rosewood middle schools, and Spring Creek High/Middle.
