Former teacher turns himself in

MOUNT OLIVE -- A former Mount Olive Middle School teacher will make his first district court appearance Monday afternoon at 1:30 in Courtroom No. 3 on a charge stemming from alleged misconduct with a student.
Jerry Dortch, 43, of 409 Ryan Blvd., Goldsboro, accompanied by his attorney Geoff Hulse, turned himself in at the Wayne County Magistrates Office Friday.
He was charged with one count of felony indecent liberties with a student.
Dortch is out on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
Mount Olive police last week said they were investigating alleged misconduct by a teacher at Mount Olive Middle School. The complaint was filed Feb. 19 by the family of a female student at the school.
Detectives from the police department, with the assistance of the Wayne County School System, investigated the incident.
Ken Derksen, public information director for Wayne County Public Schools, confirmed that Dortch resigned from Mount Olive Middle School on Feb. 19.
Dortch was a keyboarding instructor. He was hired by the school system in August 1999 and joined the Mount Olive Middle School staff in July 2003.
Derksen said he could not discuss details of the resignation since it is a personnel issue and by law cannot be made public.
