Railroad should be done soon at crossings

Wayne County drivers have been dealing with blocked intersections and snarled traffic on some roads this week as work crews make repairs to the CSX rail line that runs through the county.
But, barring rain, crews working on and resurfacing railroad crossings in the Goldsboro area should finish up the work by late today, according to Nelson High, community affairs director for CSX Corp.
It is not that the crossings are necessarily in "bad shape," High said. Rather the work, he said, is part of the company's routine maintenance schedule.
The closed crossing and detours can be inconvenient to the public, he said, but the work ultimately is aimed at improving safety.
Workers said they had started near Wilson and were expected to continue on into Duplin County.
Similar work was just completed in the Benson and Dunn areas, High said.
CSX is one of the nation's major rail lines, with more than 21,000 miles of tracks in the eastern United States. The company operates 1,700 miles of lines in North Carolina, carrying about 470,000 carloads of materials annually. The company has major rail yards in Rocky Mount and Hamlet.
