The Mount Olive Police Department is investigating a complaint by a student at Mount Olive Middle School and her family involving a teacher.
No charges have been filed.
"We are currently investigating allegations reported by the student," said Chief of Police Ralph Schroeder.
The department is working with the Wayne County Public Schools System in the investigation, he said.
Schroeder said that further information will be released at the "appropriate time."
He declined further comment.
Ken Derksen, public information director for Wayne County Public Schools, confirmed that a teacher named Jerry Dortch resigned from Mount Olive Middle School on Feb. 19.
Dortch was a keyboarding instructor. He was hired by the school system in August 1999 and joined the Mount Olive Middle School staff in July 2003.
Derksen said he could not discuss details of the resignation as it's a personnel issue and by law cannot be made public.
