Sheriff says telemarketing calls have nothing to do with his office

Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders wants the public to know his office is not affiliated with a telemarketing campaign seeking money for the United States Sheriffs Association.

Winders said callers have told residents that the money will be used to buy bullet-proof vests for officers.

Winders said his office receives no money from the organization and none of his officers are members.

The sheriff did say that a mailing campaign by the North Carolina Sheriff's Association will be held soon and that the letters mailed will carry his name.

Neither Winders nor the Wayne County Sheriffs Office receive money from the state group but it lobbies on behalf of state's 100 sheriffs and pays for leadership training for officers.
