Johnny Dickerson

The search continues today for a New Bern man who managed to escape from the Neuse Correctional Institution west of Goldsboro around 9:40 p.m. Saturday.

Cynthia Thornton, assistant superintendent for programs for the prison, said officials are still investigating how the man, Johnny Dickerson, 29, managed to escape.

Dickerson was serving a six-month sentence for misdemeanor larceny, communicating threats and simple assault.

However, Ms. Thornton said Dickerson, who was serving his fifth prison term, was facing pending charges involving different kinds of robbery in Craven and Pitt counties, including armed robbery or robbery with a dangerous weapon -- both felonies.

She said officers with the Prison Emergency Response Team were in the New Bern area.

Anyone who has seen Dickerson or has information on his whereabouts is asked to call Neuse Correctional Institution at 731-2023 or call their local law enforcement agency.
