Cornerstone winners to be honored with plaques

Winners of the Wayne County Chamber of Com-merce's Annual Cornerstone Award, the organization's most prestigious award, will be honored with a ceremony Tuesday.

The award is presented to individuals that have shown commitment to the growth of the community through leadership, attitude and example.

Plaques listing each winner's name and his or her accomplishments were made and installed in the brick floor at the Cornerstone Commons, formerly known as Pedestrian Plaza.

A dedication ceremony of the plaques will be held at he Cornerstone Commons on the corner of South Center and East Chestnut streets beginning at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Cornerstone Award recipients include Richard B. Moffatt, Hal H. Tanner Sr., Clarence W. "Icky" Peacock, William A. Dees Jr., Hal K. Plonk, Bertha Shepherd Wooten, Ollie Toomey, Troy W. Pate Jr., Jimmie Edmundson, Bill Kemp Jr., Dr. Edward Wilson, David Weil and Bill Bryan.

The Pedestrian Plaza was changed to Cornerstone Commons in July to make the area a permanent commemorative space honoring those who have served the community.

The plaques were purchased by the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp.

The ceremony is sponsored by the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, City of Goldsboro and the DGDC.

Future Cornerstone Award winners will also receive a plaque in the commons when awarded.
