County's attorney stopped on suspicion of DWI

Wayne County Attorney Borden Parker Jr. was charged with driving while under the influence and speeding 60 miles per hour in a 35 mile-per-hour zone early Sunday morning.
Parker, 64, was stopped by a state Highway Patrol officer on George Street near its intersection with Elm Street at about 1:30 a.m. He was driving a 2003 Buick.
Parker registered a blood alcohol content of 0.16, according to a report filed by the Highway Patrol at the Wayne County Courthouse.
Parker, who has served as county attorney for decades, was not booked through the county jail, according to reports.
County Manager Lee Smith said he has spoken with all county commissioners except for Andy Anderson, who is out of the county, and that he does not anticipate that the incident will affect Parker's employment with the county.
"Borden Parker has been in my seven years here, and my 24 years in county government, one of the best county attorneys I have ever worked with. He is a good county attorney and a good friend -- and a good friend to this county, and I hope he continues to be.
"This is unfortunate, but it is something that he will work through. As county manager, I will work with him through this and he will continue to do a good job for us."
Parker's first appearance is scheduled for March 5 at 9 a.m. in Wayne County District Court.
