Local fire departments receive grants from state

A number of Wayne County volunteer fire departments have received grants to help buy new equipment from the state Department of Insurance.
The grants were announced recently by state Insurance Commissioner Jim Long.
The Pikeville-Pleasant Grove Volunteer Fire Department received a total of $20,612.50, The Indian Springs Volunteer Fire Department received a total of $13,942.25, the Thoroughfare Volunteer Fire Department received $2,958.46, the Nahunta Volunteer Fire Department received a total of $14,101.31, the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department received $11,390.40, the Polly Watson Volunteer Fire Department received $3,391.43, and the Smith's Chapel Volunteer Fire Department received a total of $4,135.73.
The money comes from the state's Volunteer Fire Department Fund, which was created by the legislature in 1988.
All grant money recived must be matched dollar-for-dollar by contributions from local sources.
