Food Initiative receives grants totaling $24,000

The Wayne Food Initiative has received two grants in the past month totaling $24,000.
Wayne Food Initiative is a new group formed about a year ago to build a local sustainable food system. Sustainable development has been described as an environmentally-friendly pattern of using natural resources.
Wayne Food Initiative Director Cheryl Alston said both of the grants are going to help the organization build the local food system.
The first grant of $10,000 came from Heifer, a charitable organization that promotes sustainable development to end world hunger. Mrs. Alston said Wayne Food Initiative will use the money from this grant to fund its Emerging Leaders Program.
The other grant of $14,000 was awarded by the Rural Advancement Foundation International, which uses its Tobacco Communities Reinvestment Fund to offer financial assistance to encourage traditional farming communities to invest in new farmers and farming methods.
The Wayne Food Initiative group plans to use the money to create a two-acre community garden on Slocumb Street.
