MOUNT OLIVE -- A group of students at Mount Olive College has put their classroom knowledge to work, in the form of creating a nonprofit organization to assist local children and organizations that serve the needs of children.

The Fundamentals of Management class, taught by Dr. Dave Hill, chair of the management and human resources department, submitted paperwork to establish itself as nonprofit, selected officers and created a mission statement, code of conduct and bylaws.

Trojans for Hope also held its first fundraiser, a barbecue plate sale, last month, raising over $1,200 that will be used to purchase school supplies and equipment for Edgewood Community Developmental School in Goldsboro.

Hill said he was pleased with the efforts produced from his class.

"It is a pleasure to be part of the excitement of organizing a nonprofit organization to serve the community, and work with such dedicated students," he said.

"The goal in life is to do well for you, but to do for others is the ultimate goal," said Michael Ratley of Hope Mills, the group's president.
