Five undercover Sheriff's Department deputies were in an Ash Street fast food restaurant Tuesday when a man was shot outside nearby, according to Goldsboro police reports.

Police made an arrest about eight hours after the 12:30 p.m. shooting near KFC, according to an arrest report.

Later, another man was shot in a parking lot on North Jefferson Avenue, reports show.

The victim in the first shooting, Demetrius Royall, 28, of Carridge Road, has since been treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, police officials said.

The driver's side door and passenger window of Royall's Chrysler PT Cruiser also suffered about $500 in damages in the incident.

After being shot, Royall drove his vehicle into the parking lot of the restaurant and dialed 911, not knowing that the undercover officers were inside, police said.

At 8:30 p.m., Goldsboro Investigator Dale Foster arrested Demetrel Rashawn Best, 27, of North William Street, who was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and inflicting serious injury, an arrest report shows.

Best was jailed under $100,000 bond, police said.

Later, in an apparently unrelated incident, Donovan Dewitt, 21, of Pineview Avenue, was shot in a parking lot in the 1100 block of North Jefferson Avenue, according to a report.

Dewitt told police he saw a group of teenagers playing with a gun in the parking lot of the Jefferson Apartments immediately before the shooting, police said.

The 21-year-old said he heard a loud noise and then felt a sharp pain in his leg.

Dewitt was transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released, police said. The victim signed a non-prosecution form in the incident, so no charges have or will be filed, according to the police report.
