Boys and Girls Club board will serve pancakes this Saturday

Buying a stack of pancakes this weekend could help give a Wayne County child a place to go after school.
The Boys and Girls Club will have its annual Pancake Day Saturday at the club, which is located at 1401 Royall Ave.
The fundraiser is held each year to help pay for all the programs at the three Boys and Girls clubs -- in Goldsboro, Mount Olive and Fremont.
Director Mary Ann Dudley said the money covers expenses like materials the members need to participate in the programs and field trips. The money also helps the clubs pay staff members who are not funded by other grants.
Pancakes will be served from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tickets are $5 each and available from any club board member ahead of time or at the club during Pancake Day.
Mrs. Dudley said Pancake Day is a board-driven event. The board members sell the tickets and then cook and serve the pancakes.
Volunteers from Seymour Johnson and all over the county come and help. On any given Pancake Day, she said, there will be at least 50 people spread out over two shifts doing different tasks.
Each shift has sausage chefs, pancake mixers, pancake chefs, a beverage station crew and a syrup and butter crew. Some collect tickets and money at the door. Others clean the tables and take out the trash. Runners fetch materials for the chefs.
"It takes a lot of hands to prepare and serve the pancakes," Mrs. Dudley said.
Plates will be served for eat-in or take-out. If you eat in, $5 covers all-you-can-eat, Mrs. Dudley said.
"It's still the best bargain in town," she said.
Pancake Day last year raised a little more than $11,000 after expenses. Mrs. Dudley said she counted 1,650 tickets last year for both eat-in and take-out plates. That was the second highest collecton since 1998, she said.
The goal this year is to raise at least $10,000.
"Anything over that makes it a great Pancake Day," she said.
