CALYPSO -- A 99-year-old Burgaw woman died Thanksgiving morning in a one-vehicle accident on U.S. 117 Bypass North.
Catherine Guy, who was pronounced dead at the scene by Duplin County Medical Examiner Dr. Hervy B. Kornegay Sr., was a passenger in a 2002 Ford Taurus being driven by her son, James Guy, 79, both of 3424 N.C. 53 East at Burgaw.
James Guy, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, was transported by Duplin EMS to Wayne Memorial Hospital at Goldsboro.
Highway Patrol Trooper J.R. Benton said that Guy did not remember the accident and may have suffered a medical condition prior to the wreck.
Benton said Guy was driving the speed limit when the accident happened.
The Guy vehicle was traveling north on U.S. 117 towards Mount Olive about 10:20 a.m. Thursday when it ran off the road to the left and into the grassy median. The car struck a large medal pole that supports a large overhead sign.
No one else was in the car and no other vehicles were involved.
Benton said the vehicle, valued at $10,000, was demolished.
The investigation is continuing, he said.
