Students from 24 public schools will kick off the holiday season during the annual districtwide choral showcases this week, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Dillard Middle School.

Both performances start at 7 p.m.

This is the eighth year for the holiday showcase, begun in 2001 with 12 schools participating.

The anticipated event is an opportunity for schools to demonstrate the talents and hard work of their choruses.

"It is extremely valuable to our students to have an audience beyond their teacher and their school," said Dr. Ralph Smith, WCPS performing arts coordinator. "The arts are a significant part of helping children become well-rounded citizens, and they assist the schools' academic programs by providing motivation, interest and relevance."

Choruses featured during Tuesday evening's performance will include Carver Heights, Eastern Wayne, Meadow Lane, North Drive, School Street and Spring Creek elementary schools, Dillard, Eastern Wayne and Greenwood middle schools, Goldsboro Intermediate, and Eastern Wayne and Goldsboro high schools.

Thursday's program will feature choruses from Brogden Primary, Carver, Fremont STARS, Northeast, Northwest and Rosewood elementary schools, Grantham School, Norwayne and Rosewood middle schools, and Charles B. Aycock, Rosewood and Southern Wayne high schools.

Rick Pridgen, Board of Education member, will serve as master of ceremonies.

There is an admission charge of $5 per person, with proceeds to benefit the choral programs at participating schools. Children younger than 5 years old are admitted free.

Doors open at 6:15 p.m.
