Re-enactment set for weekend

KINSTON -- Cannons will belch smoke and fire; musicians will play; and costumed re-enactor sailors and Marines will mass on the banks of the Neuse River Saturday and Sunday at the CSS Neuse-Caswell Memorial State Historic Site in Kinston.
A rare nighttime artillery firing demonstration will be Saturday evening at 6:15.
As part of the site's annual Civil War living history program, period-costumed members of several North Carolina and Virginia reenactment/living history organizations will show how sailors navigated vessels, life on-board ship and more.
The event is free and open to the public, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and again from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Saturday. The event will continue Sunday from noon until 4 p.m.
On Saturday, the site will reopen at 5:45 p.m. so visitors will have plenty of time to get in position to experience the special after dark-artillery firing demonstration. Visitors should bring a flashlight to help them find their way to the demonstration area.
The historic site is located on U.S. 70 Businsess (Vernon Avenue) in Kinston.
