Hardee's on Berkeley Boulevard closed this week, and company officials say they are unsure what will happen to the property.

Rick Rountree, a spokesman for Boddie-Noell Enterprises, the family-owned restaurant company based in Rocky Mount that leases the building and operates three other Hardee's in Goldsboro, said the other three restaurants will not close.

They are located on 11th Street, West Grantham Street and East Ash Street.

Boddie-Noell operates more than 340 Hardee's restaurants, most of which are in North Carolina and Virginia -- more than any other company in the United States.

An employee at the restaurant confirmed Tuesday that workers will continue to clear out the building, which is now boarded up, this week.

Rountree would not say why the Berkeley location was the one chosen for closure. He said the company is now looking at assisting the workers who have been displaced.

"With this decision made, our focus and concern right now is for our people, and we are making every effort to offer opportunities to affected employees to work in other restaurant locations we operate," he said.

Rountree said company officials are not sure what will happen to the property, which is a prime commercial location at the corner of Berkeley and Cashwell Drive.

The Berkeley Boulevard location is one of four Hardee's restaurants ac-quired by Boddie-Noell in 2007, along with the purchase of 34 Hardee's restaurants in North Carolina from parent Hardee's Food Systems Inc.

The Berkeley restaurant has been in operation for more than a decade, although Rountree wasn't sure when it first opened.
