Monterio Devon Newsome

A man suspected in a Sept. 7 shooting that left 18-year-old Craig Doubt III dead turned himself in late Monday night at the Wayne County Magistrate's office.

Monterio Devon New-some, 20, of Powell Road, did not say much except that he wanted a lawyer before speaking to police, Goldsboro Police Depart-ment spokes-man Chad Calloway said.

He was being held in the Wayne County Jail without bond.

Calloway said after Newsome turned himself in, he mostly employed his right to remain silent in the custody of authorities.

"I don't know that he has an attorney already," he said. "I do know that he does not want to speak without one. He did not talk to us."

The arrest at the magistrate's office was without incident, Calloway added.

Goldsboro police Chief Tim Bell deferred all comment to Calloway, saying the police sergeant and spokesman spearheaded the investigation.

Asked if Goldsboro police were confident from evidence collected that Newsome was the man responsible for the death of Doubt, Calloway said "sure, very much so."

Doubt was discovered by police lying behind a home at 1722 E. East Maple St. He had been shot in the back of the head. He was taken by helicopter to Pitt Memorial Hospital, where he died the next day.

Doubt's father could not be reached for comment at his place of business early today.

In October, he told the News-Argus that his son had had trouble with assailants before and that he had come home more than once with cuts and bruises, but that he had declined to press charges against the young man he said had been harassing him.

At one point, Doubt's parents sent him away to stay with relatives in another state to get him out of harm's way, but he later returned.

Police are not saying anything about the evidence collected at the scene or what might have been the motive for the shooting.
