Friends of Goldsboro lawyer Lindsay Warren have raised $35,000 to start an endowment in his honor.

The former senator and past president of the N.C. Bar Association said it came as a complete surprise to him but that he was honored.

"It was quite an honor for an old lawyer," said Warren, who turned 84 earlier this month.

The North Carolina Bar Association named a Justice Fund after him. The association's foundation has several types of funds that help promote the administration of justice, equity and fairness. For example, one of the programs funded by the foundation provides council for indigent defendants.

The association announced during a ceremony at the N.C. Bar Center in Cary earlier this fall that Warren and three other lawyers had Justice Funds created in their names.

A Justice Fund is a named endowment that honors those lawyers in the state whose careers have demonstrated dedication to the pursuit of justice and outstanding service to the profession and to the public. Those so honored received special recognition in the form of a permanent plaque and biographical sketch that will be maintained at the N.C. Bar Center.

Warren retired several years ago from the Warren, Kerr, , Taylor and Smith law firm. He still comes in to work from time to time,, said partner Trey Taylor.

"He tried to slow down.... This is something you can't do part-time," Taylor said. "We still rely on him for council, but we try not to disturb his retirement any more than necessary."

Taylor said a number of clients, lawyers, family and friends contributed to the fund. And several friends from Goldsboro and Mount Olive accompanied him and family members to the ceremony.

"He had some grandchildren there, too," Taylor said.

It was a well-deserved honor, he added.

Warren remains a member of the N.C. Bar Association. He and his wife, Mary Todd, have 13 grandchildren.
