Thirty-two families were assisted by the Wayne County Humane Society during its first Pet Food Distribution event Sunday afternoon at Carolina Mini Storage on Berkeley Boulevard. The number of pets assisted were 76 dogs and 41 cats.
The Humane Society hopes to continue the distributions every third Sunday from 2 until 3 p.m. at the same location.
Part of the success of that venture will depend on the public continuing to donate food.
Dog and cat food can be dropped off at Carolina Mini Storage between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturdays.
The pet food drive is held to help families in need of assistance. The honor system is used, with the Humane Society asking families how many pets they have and the size of the animals so the proper amount of food can be determined.
No proof of income is required.
