Development Corp. looks at South John Street upgrade

The Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp. board of directors met Wednesday to discuss topics brought up at its annual retreat about how to beautify and improve the downtown area.
Several projects were discussed, including one that would improve one area in particular -- South John Street.
The board approved using grant money to paint houses opposite the newly built Self-Help homes on the 400 block of South John Street to make the area more aesthetically pleasing and encourage buyers toward both the new homes and the historic homes in that block.
"The entire houses won't be painted, just the visible areas from the street," DGDC President Mark Webb said.
The homes are owned by Preservation North Carolina and are for sale for rehabilitation through the organization and the DGDC.
As for the Self-Help homes, two are still currently for sale, and are in the $100,000 range.
Board members also talked about the group's annual sponsorship campaign, and said they would do things differently this year.
Instead of the Christmas social that the DGDC has held for many years to show appreciation to its sponsors, it and the board will hold a sponsorship and media blitz on Jan. 8 at the Paramount Theatre as a way to not only show appreciation but also to encourage others to sponsor the group's events throughout the year.
Members also discussed the DGDC's annual Halloween event -- "Boo It" -- that will be held Oct. 31 from 4 to 6 p.m. downtown.
From 4 p.m. until 5 p.m., there will be games for children, face painting, a hay ride, fortune telling and pumpkin decorating at Cornerstone Commons. From 5 until 6 p.m., children can trick-or-treat at participating downtown businesses.
