PIKEVILLE -- An investigation into "some allegations" at Charles B. Aycock High School is all law enforcement authorities will say is happening at the school after officers entered the school and conducted interviews last week.

The State Bureau of Investigation is involved, and that agency has made specific requests about the release of information to "protect the integrity of the investigation," Sheriff's Office Capt. Tom Effler said.

"What's in that (news) release is about all we're able to say right now," Effler said in his office late last week after the newspaper learned of the investigation.

Although authorities would not divulge specifics of the investigation for release to the public, Sheriff Carey Winders said he wanted students and parents to know there is no inherent threat to student safety.

"Yes, there is an investigation going on pertaining to the high school," Winders said. "Let me emphasize, though, that no students or staff are in danger."

The sheriff said the school system had acted in the proper manner by turning the situation over to authorities immediately after learning of the allegations.

"The school system has taken proper action and now law enforcement is investigating," Winders said. "If and when anything develops we will have further announcements, but at this time ... we cannot release anything further."
