Seminar for parents offered on Thursday

A communitywide parent seminar is being planned for Thursday at the H.V. Brown Center on Poplar Street, sponsored by the Title I program of Wayne County Public Schools.
Twelve presenters will provide parents with information that can help students academically and socially. A special keynote address will also be given by renowned educator Marva Collins, founder of Westside Preparatory School in Chicago. Ms. Collins has been featured on "60 Minutes," won the National Humanities Medal from President Bush in 2004, and is a recipient of the Jefferson Award for Benefiting the Disadvantaged.
The 12th annual "Empowering Parents for Student Success Seminar" begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs until 1:30 p.m. The opening assembly will be followed by a series of mini sessions covering various topics.
"Parents are a child's first and most important teachers," said Mary McKoy, WCPS Title 1 Parent Facilitator. "Our district is deeply committed to providing training sessions for parents that will enable them to help their children succeed in school."
Among the topics that will be discussed are "Reading is a Family Affair," "Gang Awareness," "Parents' Role at the Parent Teacher Conference" and "Homework, Habits, and Hugs."
Several local businesses have donated door prizes in support of the parent seminar. Lunch and baby sitters will also be provided.
Ms. Collins will also have a special presentation with WCPS staff members at 6:30 in the Goldsboro High School auditorium.
