The Health Department will hold a flu clinic on site Oct. 16 from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m.

There are about 1,700 vaccines available, Health Director James Roosen recently told the Board of Health.

No appointments are necessary at the upcoming clinic, say officials, who have devised a system designed to promote faster processing.

Patients are asked to report according to the first letter of their last name. Letters A-F will be seen from 7 to 9 a.m.; G-L from 9 to 11 a.m.; M-R from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and S-Z from 1 to 4 p.m.

Registration forms can also be obtained in advance online, by accessing the Web site www.waynegov.com through the Health Department link under "Forms." They are available in English and Spanish.

The flu vaccine is recommended for children from 6 months old to 18 years of age, with those between 6 months and 4 years old eligible to receive the vaccine free. Children 5-18 will also be screened to determine eligibility for a free vaccine.

Senior citizens and other adults with chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, heart and lung disease or immune-compromised, are also encouraged to obtain the shot.

Medicaid, Medicare & Health Choice patients are also covered, and should bring insurance cards for those or other forms of insurance. Cost of the vaccine this year is $25, $45 for the pneumonia vaccine.

Provisions will also be made for non-ambulatory patients to remain in their vehicle. Drive-up parking will be made available on the Simmons Street side of the Health Department. Those patients are asked to have someone register beforehand inside the building.

Parking will also be available on the Herman Street side of the building.
