Seventy-seven area restaurants and food stands have received "Golden A" awards, based on scores given throughout the year's health inspections.

This is the 10th year for the recognition, sponsored by the Environmental Health section of the Wayne County Health Department. The distinction goes to restaurants and foodstands earning 95 percent or higher throughout the year.

A few changes were made to the program this year, said Shane Smith, food and lodging supervisor for environmental health.

Firstly, the annual banquet was not held due to lagging attendance.

The "Golden A" is also being awarded on a calendar-year basis, prompted by a change to risk-based inspections, Smith said.

"That means that all food serving establishments are inspected on the amount of foods they cook and cool down through the danger zone -- 135 degrees to 45 degrees," he said.

Requirement criteria also changed.

"Each awarded facility must have a score of at least 95 or higher all year plus be in the top 10 percent of total average in its risk category," he said. "This has made the award even more special, given that all Golden A awarded facilities are truly the best Wayne County has to offer in regards to overall sanitary conditions."

Top winners in the five categories include Schlotzsky's Deli, Eastern Regional VR Food Service and B&G Grill, restaurants; Magnolia Place, institutional food service; Food Lion on Ash Street, meat market; Domino's Pizza on Spence Avenue; and Rosewood High School, North Drive and Spring Creek elementary schools, public/private schools.
