Poll: North Carolina favors McCain

More than half of North Carolina residents questioned in the latest Elon University Poll gave Re-publican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain higher marks than his opponent, Democrat Sen. Barack Obama.
In the poll released today, McCain received favorable ratings from 54 percent of the participants, while Obama was supported by only 37 percent.
Vice presidential preferences were closer, however, with Republican Sarah Palin supported by 49 percent of respondents and Democrat Joe Biden by 41 percent.
And in the state's U.S. Senate race, despite 51 percent of people saying they believe it's time for a new person to hold the office, the race appears to be about even with incumbent Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole and state Sen. Kay Hagan both polling at 35 percent.
In the gubernatorial contest, 37 percent of respondents supported the Re-publican Party, while 35 pledged to vote Democratic.
The Elon poll was conducted Sept. 15-18 and included 411 residents. It has a margin of error of 4.9 percent.
