Two area elementary schools have been named "Exemplary Schools" for the 2007-08 school year by the North Carolina Reading First and the N.C. Department of Public Instruction.

School Street Elementary and Carver Heights Elementary were among a handful of schools who earned the state award.

"These schools received the award because of their effective implementation of Reading First components, ninety minute reading blocks and thirty minute intervention, and classroom behavioral management. School Street Elementary and Carver Heights Elementary also received high marks because of their growth in reading, testing data, safe and orderly environment, and because the schools met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)," said Hope Meyerhoeffer, WCPS director of literacy.

"We are very proud of these two schools for the high expectations and the level of excellence the staff holds their students to."
