Open houses, signaling the start of a new school year in Wayne County Public Schools, will be Wednesday and Thursday nights.

First day of classes will be Monday, Aug. 25. Two schools in the district, however -- Wayne School of Engineering and Wayne Early/Middle College High School -- began Aug. 5.

Parents and students are encouraged to participate in the open houses, which allow for an opportunity to locate classes, to meet teachers and to pick up supply lists. In the upper grades, students will also have a chance to see daily schedules.

Since the annual event draws thousands of students and parents, time to speak with teachers at length is limited, but parents will be able to learn a bit about some of the expectations for the coming school year.

Open house for middle and high schools will be held on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. with a few exceptions.

The schedule at Rosewood High School will be staggered, from 6-8 p.m., to accommodate parents traveling from the middle school to attend. A special orientation for incoming freshmen is also planned at 6 p.m. in the high school gym.

Goldsboro High School will also host its Freshman Academy information session on Monday from 6:30 until 8 p.m. in the school auditorium. This event is for all new incoming freshmen students and their parents, with an opportunity to learn about the program "America's Choice," course of study options and avoiding freshman pitfalls.

Elementary schools, including Edgewood Community Developmental School, will hold their event on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. All grades at Grantham School are scheduled to attend from 5-8 p.m.

Two schools will also host separate open house/orientations for incoming freshmen and sixth graders.

Eastern Wayne High School freshman orientation will take place on Tuesday from 8 a.m. until noon, while the sixth grade orientation at Spring Creek Junior High will be held later that day, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gymnasium.
