Col. Mark Kelly will be the next 4th Fighter Wing commander, Air Force officials confirmed Thursday.

The news came just a day before Col. Thomas Bergeson was set to take the reins at a ceremony on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

Bergeson was reassigned to Elmendorf Air Force Base’s 3rd Fighter Wing July 31, in light of the death of former 3rd Commander Brig. Gen. Thomas Tinsley.

Kelly will come to Seymour Johnson from Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, the deployed location members of the 4th’s 335th Fighter Squadron returned from earlier this year.
