Smart Start receives $3,000 grant from Target

The Partnership for Children of Wayne County, also known as Smart Start, recently received a $3,000 Target grant to fund its multicultural Arts for Tots program, providing free assembles throughout the year.
The assemblies are educational and make the arts affordable and accessible to young children, said Kim Best, director of community services. Among the events being scheduled this year are African Acrobats, Larrie Yazzie (Native American), Khac Chi/Vietnamese, and Alborada Latin American Family.
"Smart Start has been working in Wayne County since 1998 to help ensure that young children arrive at school healthy and ready to succeed and this year we celebrate 10 years of service to the children and families of our county," she said.
Target's local grants are making a difference in the communities served, said Laysha Ward, vice president of community relations for the company. Since opening its doors, Target has given 5 percent of its income to organizations that support education, the arts, social services and volunteerism.
