MOUNT OLIVE — More than 300 new freshmen and transfer students will soon arrive on campus at Mount Olive College, where they will participate in Welcome Week activities to get acquainted with college life.

Traditional classes start on Wednesday, Aug. 20, with new students at the school expected Aug. 16-18, officials said.

“Welcome Week provides students the opportunity to make connections within a supportive community,” said Dr. Ronda Bryant, assistant vice president for student development. “As they

transition to campus life, they will be able to step out of their comfort zones and meet new people.”

The event is not only important for incoming students, but for faculty and staff as well, Dr. Bryant said.

During the week, students will have upper classmen-led mentor groups which carry over into the first semester as part of the Freshman Seminar class to help ease the transition into the academic, spiritual and social aspects of college.

Activities planned will provide students the opportunity to participate in peer discussion groups, teambuilding and social events geared around the “ins and outs” of college life.

There will also be an assembly, worship services, a community service project and cookout, as well as

several informative presentations, college officials said.

It will also be a time for orientation and finalizing fall class schedules in time for classes to begin.

“Welcome Week is an exciting and important time for our new students, and our faculty and staff are committed to making sure that they start the year off right,” Dr. Bryant said. “We look forward to their arrival.”
