School Street gets AYP 'pass'

As the results of No Child Left Behind for Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP, are still being finalized, Wayne County Public Schools is high on the list of school systems in the region, with another area school added to the list on Wednesday.
N.C. Department of Public Instruction released the preliminary findings Monday afternoon, showing Wayne County with 16 of 30 schools -- with three undetermined -- making AYP and the district meeting 89 percent of its total target goals.
Then, Wednesday afternoon DPI announced a revision to the list, with nine schools across the state added that previously had been deemed not making AYP. One Wayne County school was among them, School Street Elemen-tary.
According to the state list, Chapel Hill/Carrboro schools led the schools that made AYP, with 58.8 percent. Initially, Wayne tied Chatham County schools in second place, each with 53.3 percent.
But the revision changed that, moving Wayne ahead with 56.7 percent.
Other area school systems and their results included Johnston County, 50 percent; Wilson County, 43.5 percent; Duplin County, 26.7 percent; Lenoir County, 22.2 percent; and Sampson County, 17.6 percent.
Locally, officials said they were pleased with the outcome after NCLB standards incrementally changed.
