LA GRANGE -- About 46 pigs in a Goldsboro Milling Co. tractor trailer died Wednesday after a truck driver failed to make a turn properly, the Lenoir County Highway Patrol reported.
The 18-wheeler carrying nearly 200 pigs overturned around 7 p.m. at the intersection of Jenny Lind Road and N.C. 903, Sgt. G.S. Hemby said.
The accident closed both roads for about three hours while the driver, whose name, age and address were not yet available to the patrol office Thursday morning, was cited in the incident, he said.
He added that the driver may have had brake trouble.
"I believe he said his brakes weren't working, and he tried to make the turn and the truck overturned," Hemby said. "He had 192 pigs in the trailer, and I believe 46 died at the scene."
