Technology students do well in national competition

Wayne County Public Schools recently earned 16 top-10 places in events at the 30th annual National Technology Student Association conference in Orlando, Fla.
Five students also placed first and two placed third in their events.
Four thousand students competed in 60 events in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Eastern Wayne High School's Raya Taylor was also named the TSA national secretary and Eastern Wayne Middle's Marques McPhail received the gold star achievement award, the highest achievement award offered.
TSA is a student organization devoted to teaching technology education.
The following is the list of local awards received:
Eastern Wayne High: Michael McKnight, first place agriculture and biotechnology and first place technical sketching; Raya Taylor, first place agriculture and biotechnology; and Andy Wagner, top ten winner for desktop publishing.
Eastern Wayne Middle: Marques McPhail, top ten for career challenge and TSA multimedia.
Norwayne Middle: Karly Derwitz and Cady Sheeks, first place winners, manufacturing challenge; Rebecca Pate and Kelli Gerken, third place winners, construction challenge; Myra Waheed, top ten winner, medical technology; Rachael Jackson, top ten winner, medical tecnology and challenging technology issue; and Amanda Howell and Bradley Glover, top ten winners, marine design challenge.
