MOUNT OLIVE -- The Carver High School Alumni and Friends Association's annual alumni weekend will held this Thursday through Sunday.

A highlight of the event will be the Friday night reception and banquet at the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center on the campus of Mount Olive College. The reception will start at 6 p.m. followed by the banquet at 7 p.m.

Dr. Robert E. Lofton, a Mount Olive native and a 1958 graduate of Carver High School, will be the banquet speaker.

Lofton earned his bachelor's of science degrees in mathematics and economics from N.C. Central University in 1962 and his master's in business administration in 1964.

He received his Ph.D. in public management and higher education in 1982 from the American University in Washington, D.C.

After retiring from the District of Columbia Public Schools in 1999, Lofton accepted a position as assistant director of internships in the field of computer science, engineering, mathematics and the sciences at Prince George's Community College. He also is an adjunct professor of business ethics and economics at Strayer University and is a consultant for the U.S. Dept. of Education.

A golf tournament will kick off the festivities on Thursday at the Southern Wayne Country Club. A "youth night" talent show will be held that night at 6 p.m. at Carver Elementary School. Scholarships also will be awarded.

A parade will be held Saturday at 10 a.m., and will start in front of the old high school building on South Breazeale Avenue. A membership meeting will start at 11 a.m. followed by a picnic at noon.

The Class of 1968 will hold a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at the cafeteria at the old school.

A dance will start at 9 a.m. at the Southern Wayne Country Club and the weekend will conclude on Sunday with a prayer breakfast.
