Three small businesses were honored Thursday night with Wayne Community College's (WCC) Business and Industry's 13th annual Small Business Awards.
Presented at the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce's Business After Hours event at Three Eagles Golf Course on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, the winners were: Special Recognition, Geographic Technologies Group; New Business of the Year, The Flying Shamrock Irish Pub; and Small Business of the Year, Karen's Custom Framing.
Patty Graham, director of membership and marketing for the chamber, noted that it was appropriate the awards were given on base as two of the businesses -- The Flying Shamrock and Karen's Custom Framing -- have direct ties to the Air Force.
For Karen Sergent-Rakers, owner of Karen's Custom Framing for the past four years, located at 116 N. Center St., the award was an affirmation of a business well run.
"It's just amazing," she said. "I'm very honored ... and kind of speechless."
WCC President Dr. Kay Albertson said that Karen's was selected not only because of the quality work she does and the way she runs her business, but also because of her willingness to
contribute back to the community.
