From staff reports

A man suspected of shooting a Goldsboro police officer during a traffic stop last week has been released from Pitt Memorial Hospital and is now in the Wayne County Jail, facing charges of attempted first-degree murder.

Jerome Demond Wright, 25, was released Friday. He also was shot during the altercation at the intersection of Elm and Creech streets June 8.

Officer Clint Hales was wounded and was treated at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Investigators have not said why Hales stopped Wright's vehicle, nor how the shooting occurred.

Wright was charged by the state Bureau of Investigation with attempted murder, two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a concealed weapon and simple possession of marijuana.

He is being held under $1 million secured bond.

Wright also was served with outstanding warrants by the Goldsboro Police Department with assault on a female and false imprisonment.

His first appearance is scheduled for Monday at 9 a.m. in Wayne County District Court.
